Glam-pop Tokio Hotel makes teens swoon

Tokio Hotel band members, from left, Tom Kaulitz, Gustav Schafer, Bill Kaulitz and Georg Listing. They've sold close to 3 million CDs and DVDs in their native Germany.  View related photos

LOS ANGELES - Move over Jonas Brothers, the Kaulitz twins are moving in.

The 18-year-old Kaulitz brothers comprise half of Tokio Hotel, a German glam-pop quartet that is creating Beatles-like hysteria among the teen set in their native land. They've sold close to 3 million CDs and DVDs in their native country, and are hoping to replicate that rabid fan base in the United States.

"They're the stepping stone between the tween stuff and My Chemical Romance," says Andrew Gyger, senior product manager for Virgin Entertainment Group, a few days after the foursome appeared at Virgin's Times Square store in New York in May to promote its English-language album, "Scream."

"The in-store was massive in terms of sales and the amount of girls that showed up," Gyger says, relaying stories of at least one girl fainting and screaming teens lining up around the block for the event. "The band seems to have come out of nowhere."

Actually, Tokio Hotel came out of the Internet. A YouTube search shows 123,000 video listings compared to 88,100 for the Jonas Bros. or 21,000 for a grizzled veteran like Bruce Springsteen. To further sate their young fans' appetite, for the last six months the band has produced weekly episodes of Tokio Hotel TV for its U.S. Web site.

For Tokio Hotel, the visual is as vital as the vocals and is propelled by lead singer Bill Kaulitz's anime look: straightened, teased black hair; heavy eye makeup that accentuates his delicate, androgynous, doll-like features; chain necklaces and vintage rock and roll T-shirts. He's so thin he appears almost one dimensional on stage, adding to the cartoon-like appeal. But to hear him tell it, his look comes by way of Transylvania, not Japan.

When he was 10, Bill Kaulitz dressed as a vampire for Halloween and adopted the styling year-round.

"After that, I started to color my hair and polish my nails. I started to wear makeup and stuff. I'd never heard of (anime)," Bill Kaulitz said in an interview at the Avalon Hollywood before to the group's sold-out show in Los Angeles. He, his brother, bassist Georg Listing, 20, and drummer Gustav Schafer, 19, are squashed together in a leather booth in the lounge one floor above the Avalon stage. Both he and Tom speak very good, albeit heavily accented, English, although an interpreter stands by in case any translation is needed.

Tom Kaulitz, the older brother by 10 minutes ("A lot of people think Bill is the boss, but I am the boss," he laughs), developed his hip-hop/dreads look when he was seven or eight, in part as a way to differentiate himself from his identical twin. "When we were six, we looked the same," Tom Kaulitz said. "We had sweat shirts with (the names) Bill and Tom so that teachers had a chance to know who's who."

Family support

The Kaulitz brothers began playing guitar when they were seven - the instruments were gifts from their musician stepfather. By the time they were in their mid-teens, they were playing in clubs, often to less than five people, and Listing and Schafer had joined the band.

Their mother's backing was not only desired, but vital: "We needed the support of our parents because we had no car, no money," Bill Kaulitz says.

Mom has long since stopped driving the band to gigs; they have people who do that for them now as they have accumulated a team during their meteoric rise. The group's first single, "Through the Monsoon," went to No. 1 in Germany in 2005, a pair of No. 1 albums and sold-out European tours followed.

The fan frenzy in Germany has reached epic proportions, such as when a group of teen girls delivered a fan letter that was more than seven miles long. After seeing a young fan repeatedly at shows in different cities, the band later learned that she was a runaway who had left home to follow the group. "It's still crazy to us," Bill Kaulitz says of the distaff attention.

After witnessing the spectacle at the band's February appearance at New York's Gramercy Theatre, Amy Doyle, MTV's senior VP of music and talent, became a convert. "I could not believe the line outside of screaming teen girls," she said. "It reminded me of the audience of the late '90s and 2000 for Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync."

Following that performance, MTV added the video for "Ready, Set, Go" into heavy rotation, as well as highlighted the band online, on mtv2 and on "TRL." Tokio Hotel writes a tour diary for MTV.com, which, Doyle says, had elicited more reader comments than any previous tour diary.

Selling the whole package

But the band has a long way to go before they reach Backstreet or 'N Sync like sales - since the group's CD was released in April, it has sold just over 23,000 copies. Tokio Hotel's U.S. label, Cherrytree/Interscope, has yet to take the first single, "Monsoon," to radio, but Doyle says the whole package is the band's selling point.

"Radio always helps, but there's a connection that clearly is made when the audience sees them that you can't connect with just a song; fans are making an emotional connection."

Indeed, at the Avalon show that evening, teenage girls packed up against the stage so tightly that security guards started a regular procession of lifting them over the railing as several teen become overcome by the nearness of their heroes and the pressure of those pushing behind them.

"It's so cool that we have fans already here. But we are at the beginning," Bill Kaulitz. "We really want to be successful in America, we really want to try it. There are not so many German bands who get the chance to come to America to play."

Tokio Hotel already has Madison Square Garden in its sights, but also knows it had to put in the footwork. On this trip, they went to the vaunted venue; not to perform, but to see Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige.

"It's a dream to play there," Tom Kaulitz says, shaking his head up and down. "Maybe in two years. You need goals in your life."

Bill: Inte alls (skratt)!

What do you feel vis-à-vis to your thousands of fans?

Och våran publik består mest av tjejer så I love the idea to make dream as many pretty girls (?)

Tom Kaulitz: "The fans have to learn to control themselves."

"Frankly, it doesn't bother me if people scratch me in the back or pull my clothes during a concert...But more seriously, we've already heard alarming stories about fans fighting during our concerts or in front of our hotels. Occasionally, when I'm on stage, I'll even pick out and locate the fans who are behaving badly. Sometimes I want to just put down my guitar and ask them to calm down and behave, but that might really kill the atmosphere. The fans have to learn to control themselves. We're just normal guys, and, frankly, if they really knew me, they wouldn't want to see me so badly!"

Tokio Hotel
"Scream America!" CD single

By Chelsey Ripley

Who? Tokio Hotel is a successful German pop band formed in the year 2001 in Magdeburg, Germany. Identical twin brothers, Bill Kaulitz and Tom Kaulitz performed in small talent shows as children. They later met schoolmates, Gustav Schafer and Georg Listing and their similar tastes in music led them to create a band called Devilish. They played small shows for a while and in 2003, they were approached by a music executive, Peter Hoffman. They were signed to the Universal music label in Hamburg, Germany and changed their name to Tokio Hotel (Tokio for the city of Tokyo...& why the "io?" It's a mystery. " Hotel I guess because they toured and slept in hotels a lot. The band claimed to like the name even though they've never been to Tokyo. All members of the band have their own distinct style, but might I add that these styles range from poser-scene to dread locks. Not only that but could they go any heavier on the make-up?

What? "Scream" was released as a single in America on December 11, 2007 under the name "Scream America!" It's a two track limited edition single with "Ready, Set, Go!" After appearing and performing live on MuchMusic, while touring in Canada, Ready, Set, Go! entered the Much On Demand Daily 10. It remained there for over a week. On March 25th, 2008, Scream was released in Canada. Though Tokio Hotel is growing up, it doesn't seem like they're grown up. This single is screaming alright; screaming for help.

Sound? It sounded repetitive and immature. The boy who does lyrics sounds like he's still going through puberty and the lyrics themselves were even worse! Even if you're open to all kinds of different music, Tokio Hotel makes you want to roll your eyes and slap yourself silly. Harsh, but true.

Worth the Riches? I'm gonna say no. The single only has 2 songs on it and I can pretty much guarantee you'd get tired of listening to them. I don't think many Americans would appreciate Tokio Hotel as much as they are in the UK.

"They were signed to the Universal music label in Hamburg, Germany and changed their name to Tokio Hotel (Tokio for the city of Tokyo...& why the "io?" It's a mystery.

Bill, Tom, Gustav & Georg of TOKIO HOTEL were back in the MuchMusic building today, and so naturally, since it worked so well last time, I had to pull them aside for a couple of minutes to ask them a few of your fan questions. The guys were in good spirits and once again I was amazed at how relaxed, grounded and fun they were. Here's how it all went down with the German rockers...

First off, welcome back to Canada! You just performed at the Bamboozle Festival in New Jersey. How was it?

Bill: It was really, really cool. It was the first time really performing after my surgery. We played three songs and there were a lot of fans and then after that we traveled to LA and in LA we had one concert and now we are here in Toronto.

So what do you prefer? Playing in festivals or your own concerts?

Bill: I prefer doing our own concerts.

Tom: Yeah, doing your own concerts are great. You have your own production team and your own crew and your own stage and stuff. It's great.

Bill: You know, festivals are always hard because there are so many bands and then it's just crazy backstage. Everyone is talking and there are so many people.

Georg: And you don't really get a sound check.

Tom: You always have sound problems in festivals, but I think at Bamboozle it was cool.

Bill: Yeah, it was good.

Did you get a chance to see any of the other bands perform?

Bill: Unfortunately, no. We had a really, really tight schedule.

Tom: Yeah, we had a lot of interviews to do and stuff like that and yeah, not much time.

What are some of your most embarrassing 'guilty pleasures'?

Tom: [laughs] I wouldn't admit to them. But Georg, he's a David Hasselhoff fan.

How "German" of you...

Georg: Oh, come on - not again. He's told this joke, like, 10 times now.

Tom: It's not a joke. It's the truth, but it's embarrassing.

Georg: [rolls eyes]

Bill: I love dogs, but that's not embarrassing. I just really love dogs. You know, if I see a dog I just go crazy.

Any kind in particular?

Bill: No, any dog. When I see a dog, it's like, "Oh my God, come here, come here!"

Tom: And Georg really likes to surf videos on YouPorn, and that's also embarassing. [Laughs] I'm joking.

Georg, is it true that you like Nickelback?

Georg: Yeah, I love Nickelback.

Tom: I really like the video for Rockstar because there's Kendra and, uh, from the Playboy Mansion - the three Bunnies. So that's a great video.

Are there any other Canadian bands that you know of and like?

Gustav: Is King's X from Canada?

No, don't think so.

Bill: Billy Talent are cool.

Nice. Hey Georg, does it bother you when people call you "George"?

Georg: Um, people can call me whatever they want - Georg or George.

Tom: Or you know, on his case where he stores his bass, he wrote "David Listing." [laughs] He likes the name David because of Hasselhoff. George Hasslehoff!

Georg: [groans]

[all laugh]

So last time you were in Toronto, you went up the CN Tower and went shopping at the Eaton Centre and went a bit unnoticed. Do you like that? Was it refreshing not to be attacked by throngs of fans for once?

Bill: That's always the goal, to go into a city and at first no one recognizes you, but we really want people to see us and to have fans. And now it's really cool that we have Canadian fans and that we're playing a concert tomorrow night. So I think it's better when people recognize you. That's good for a band.

Tom: It's always the goal that people recognize you on the street.

Bill: But of course, sometimes when you have free time, it's nice when no one recognizes you and you can just chill.

Tom: But that's boring.

Well, your fanbase is growing in Canada and now people know you are here for the night - they'll be looking for you.

Bill: Yeah, I think there will be some fans at the hotel tonight, but our schedule is so tight so that we are doing a lot of photoshoots and interviews during the day, so we don't have as much time this time to go out and check out things in the city.

Well, is there anything about fame that you find annoying?

Bill: I hate paparazzi, I really hate paparazzi.

Tom: Especially when we're on holidays.

Bill: Yeah, especially on holidays, it's just terrible. I hate them in Europe. In America there are also paparazzi, but not as as bad as in Europe. It's very terrible, I hate it.

So are you constantly on edge when you're walking around? Do you always notice them? Are they hiding behind corners or in bushes...?

Tom: Well, yeah, it depends. Sometimes on holidays, they hide. But, you know, on the street they just attack us.

Bill: Yeah, you know, it's OK to, I dunno, when it's at a concert or whatever, but in free time or when you're in private, I think it's just annoying.

So we all know how you got your name, but how did you come up with your band's symbol/logo?

Tom: You know, the idea was that in this logo we had a lot of T's and a lot of H's. And, yeah, that's what it is - it wasn't meant to be a big deal.

Bill: We just wanted something that was very simple. And, like, everyone can draw it and that was the idea so you can paint it on walls --

Tom: -- or windows --

Bill: -- or my neck. [laughs]

Who designed it?

Bill: We did it together with a guy --

Tom: I think it was my idea.

[all groan]

Have you ever actually worn traditional German clothing like lederhosen for Oktoberfest?

Tom: No, never. Sometimes Georg does, when he's dancing to David Hasselhoff.

Bill: We've never even been to Oktoberfest so far.

Tom: No, I hate Oktoberfest.

Do you drink beer?

Tom: Yeah, we drink a lot of beer, but not at Oktoberfest.

Well, I read this study that states the average German drinks 120 liters of beer per year.

Tom: We drink that in one month.

[all laugh]

Bill: No, we drink a lot of beer, but in America it's really hard because you have to be 21 to drink alcohol.

Tom: But not in Canada, right?

No, here in Ontario it's 19.

Tom: 19?

Gustav: [throws hands up into the air] YES!

[all laugh]

But in Montreal, it's 18.

Georg: We LOVE Montreal!

Bill: It's hard, because in Germany you have to be 18 and we were always, like, "Oh, c'mon - 18, 18, 18..." and now we are 18 and we come to America.

Tom: And you have to be 21.

Do you have any favourite kinds of beer?

Bill: Um, Heineken. Heineken is a nice beer.

Tom: I don't care.

Georg: I prefer German beer.

Gustav: I like the Czech Budweiser.

Nice, I'll have to try it. Enough about beer - back to the music. Do you have any plans to do any future collaborations with any other bands?

Tom: There's nothing planned yet, but we would love to do some collaborations.

Is there anyone in particular you'd love to work with?

Bill: Yeah, I dunno - I think there are some dreams for every band to do something with, like, the Rolling Stones or whatever, but I think, yeah, let's see.

Tom: In the summer we go back into the studio to record some songs, and I say, let's see what happens.

Bill: And then we can talk to other people, but I'm not sure, I don't have anyone in mind yet.

David Hasselhoff?

Tom: Yeah, David Hasselhoff! That would be great for Georg. Maybe a dancing project with Georg and David Hasselhoff. [laughs]

Speaking of dancing, a fan wanted to know if you, Tom, knew the Soulja Boy dance.

Tom: Yeah, I know the Soulja Boy dance, but I'm not a good dancer. No, Georg can do it, he's a very good dancer.

Can we video you doing it and put it up on YouTube?

Tom: Yeah, Georg can. He was doing the dance in the hotel room [laughs]. Yeah, Georg can do it. [laughs] No, I'm not a dancer. I'm a shy guy.

Georg: Oh, c'mon. You showed it to me this morning!

Tom: No, that was you!

Bill: I don't know this dance.

Tom: I've seen the video and the personal videos that people have uploaded to YouTube who do the dance, but you know, I'm not a dancer - I'm more a sexy guitar player [laughs].

Tomorrow night at the concert, we want to see the dance.

Tom: Yeah, maybe at the show. Together with David Hasselhoff and Georg.

BILD: Ihr seid gerade in Los Angeles angekommen.

New York ist viel europäischer. L.A. ist mehr das, was man sich als Europäer unter Amerika vorstellt.

BILD: Morgen spielt Ihr in Hollywood euer erstes komplettes Konzert nach Bills OP. Seid Ihr aufgeregt?

BILD: Das nennst Du Achtungserfolg?

Men smärtan gav resultat.

BY:  MARK PITTELKAU

Hamburg - He's overcome the worst. But for 7 days, the Tokio Hotel singer Bill Kaulitz [18] may not sing, talk or even laugh.

His voice rehabilitation then starts. The rockstar had a cyst removed from his left vocal cord last Sunday [BILD reported].

BILD: Bill, how do you feel?

Bill: Well, I've had better times in my life, but it's alright. I'm happy that I have it all behind me. But I'm still afraid about my voice and consequential damages. Everything in my life is just about my voice. I don't really have any pain, though.

BILD: How did you experience the operation?

Bill: Shortly before I was put under anesthetics, the doctors were all standing around me and at the beginning, I was staring to get a little shit scared that the narcotics wouldn't work and they'd start operating on me anyway. The mental image of having someone cut around in your throat while being fully conscious isn't exactly a hot thought. Hardly after that thought, the anesthetic doses knocked me out.

BILD: How was it to see your twin brother Tom [18] after that?

Bill: When Tom visited me in the recovery room, I still had a giant needle from the drip stuck in my arm. Tom and I both have a total needle phobia and it was really hard for us to pinch back our laughter - and I sadly wasn't allowed to laugh. And also, I had this horrible white surgery dress on with a pathetic green bonnet on my head. It looked as if I'd just jumped out of some shitty hospital soap.

BILD: How does your day currently look?

Bill: Just now I was watching the movie "Interview with a Vampire". When I'm not watching DVD's, Tom has to be here with me the whole time since he always knows exactly what I want to say. When someone asks a question, I just give Tom a quick glance and he'll answer for me almost the same way if I were to do it. Without Tom I'd probably suffer carpal tunnel syndrome from all the writing.

BILD: How often do you still have to go to the clinic?

Bill: I just have to go a few more times for a check-up and then my voice rehabilitation starts.

ROCK ONE 42

On March 13th, the "1000 Hotels European Tour" stopped at the Zenith of Montpellier. A story of a very special day with Bill and co.: one that would be the penultimate of a tour interrupted during take-off.

This Thursday, it is just a week ago that Tokio Hotel set foot on French soil, "1000 Hotels European Tour" is obligatory. At the moment, everything is ok. The joyride to Alsace, to Luxembourg, the two shows in Paris and the date of the preliminary day in Dijon went like clockwork. Of course, boys are under considerable strain: the pressure of concerts, the pace of promos and road miles stresses the body, even if they are young and lusty.

Georg not better

Nevertheless, these are four guys who seem to be in good shape that we are seeing backstage, it is 3 pm and the timing is respected to the minute. As expected, their black tourbus just enters the Grammont Area which houses the yellow Zenith of Montpellier. Close to their coaches, between two semi-trailers, Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav come naturally and greet me, as they did during our very first interview. Handshaking firm and demonstrative (they are German rockers), except for Georg who admits (in a mix of English and French) that he is sick and that it is better to avoid any physical contact. The bassist is obviously very embarrassed; he knows he is going to play with all the energy left. This becomes evident later during the interview where the boy is surprisingly quiet. Whatever, compared to him Tom is on the starting blocks and is awaiting the hour of our interview with impatience: perhaps he has, between two glasses of orange juice, some startling statements on the sexuality of his brother, revelations to be done on Gustav, at the mercy of the wildest rumours. In particular that one of him possibly leaving the band after the concert at Parc des Princes, on June 21st. Information or disinformation? The following will clarify things.

Great, all these signs!

At 3:40 pm we are entering one of the two coaches of the Germans. The first is strictly private and the second being more dedicated to interviews and photo sessions. We have twenty minutes which we should use to full capacity because we have dozens of questions, your ones.

Have you been surprised by the warm welcome of the French fans at the first four tour dates, especially during the first one at Bercy where everyone waved with "Danke" signs at a specific moment of the show?
Tom: Bercy was really one of the great moments of our lives. Especially when we saw all these signs thanking us hold up in unison. It was the greatest present that a public can offer his band. It was wow!
Bill: Obviously, when you play twice in front of over seventeen thousand people, it makes you nervous. The tension rises and when you see this kind of reaction of the audience, all this evidence of love, it can only reassure you, it stimulates you in concert and makes you better.
Georg: Being thanked in this way warms your heart, it encourages you and it makes you even stronger for the rest of the show.
Bill: Frankly, when you see what's happening to us in France, it is unbelievable. Who would have thought that while still a few months ago we were not well known and we played at the Trabendo in Paris.

Transition to act

You played "Geh" for the first time on stage during this tour. Was that the surprise you announced for the French public?
Bill: We're pleased that this has been taken as a surprise by the French fans because that?s what we wanted. This song is on the B side of the single "An deiner Seite (Ich bin da)" and we were eager to integrate it into our set list. It is a song that is very important to us. The lyrics are full of emotions because the text evokes the moment when you break up with your beloved. It speaks about things you can do or say, words that you can not find, small awkwardness related to these delicate instants where everything can take extents that you do not control. It is always difficult to leave someone because there are still feelings which remain; sense of guilt becomes apparent even when you know that it's your heart that speaks. Personally, I always find it difficult to leave, to feel when it is the right moment to split up. It is never easy to deal with your own desires, your own feelings and to act in accordance with your thoughts.
This is a song about the transition to act; sometimes we must take this step because it is the only possible solution if one considers that matter of love should only be dictated by your heart.

Gustave in the turmoil Internet

At the second concert at Bercy, you received a huge diamond record from your record company. Are you still sensitive to these kinds of rewards?
Bill: Yes, it is important for us to receive such rewards. It's like all awards that we could win this year. It is a great honour. Like Tom says, these are things that remain.
Tom: I said that? (laughs) No seriously, we don?t make music to get good grades or receive trophies to decorate our homes, but when they come, we take them with pleasure!
Georg: Particularly this one is the first diamond disc we receive here! And then, who sells records/CDs today? There are only few bands that achieve this, so we enjoy being part of the closed circle of "record selling bands".

We have recently read on the internet about an insistent rumour about Gustav possibly leaving the band just after the Parc des Princes. Whats really with it?
Bill: Oh another rumour (in French in the text)! Where may it come from? God alone knows ? (thoughtful, editorial remark). You know, at Christmas, it was Georg?s turn to leave us and he is still by our side.
Georg: Do not believe everything that is written about us and that we can not control anyway. I do not know what it is necessary to do so that certain rumours disappear like they are put out ?
Tom: You know, it is not because you can see only two or three of us sometimes that the band will get rid of one of its members. Our fans might imagine that we are living together all the time, that we all live the same things, but this is not quite the case.
Of course, we give our interviews together, we are altogether on band photos, but this is only part of our lives as musicians.

Why did you reschedule the date at the Parc des Princes?
Bill: Actually, we wanted to respond to all our fans that could not come that day in question because of examinations. We first asked ourselves if it was technically possible to postpone the concert to the following day and if it was above all playable. After verification, we saw that we could do it. Thus, there was no hesitation, history to satisfy everyone. I hope that those who could not come at the 20th can take the time to be there at the 21st because we really want it to be a party for all people who love us and follow us from the beginning. We are waiting for you (in chorus, editorial remark)!

Jotted down, we will there.

An American tour of the most successful!
Contrary to what has been said and written in the mainstream press, the first couple of concerts of TH across the Atlantic were a raving success. So, ready for the big American leap?
"Apart from Georg who had trouble with his bass in the middle of the concert, our shows in the USA and Canada went very well. The venues were sold out and the public knew our songs by heart, like in Europe. We did not feel any particular difference", admits Bill Kaulitz with a wink to "his" bass player who nods in agreement. "We did not have time to take advantage of our stay because due to snowstorms some of our flights were cancelled and we had to wait in airports, especially in Toronto." Apparently, the American continent does not scare Tokio Hotel more than that. "Of course, America is huge, and it is difficult to break through there. But apart from that, our strategy is the same. Put our name on the map everywhere we go, play wherever possible and, preferably, in more and more large venues," adds Bill as dazzled by the USA as Ribéry by the Bundesliga. "Hollywood and New York however are impressive cities. You have the feeling that it is there that things are going on," says Tom, his eyes sparkling like stars. "On one day in New York, we went out a bit and did some shopping. We do not necessarily have the time or the leisure to do that in Europe while we are on tour. We are eager to return," says his brother.
TH has just announced a new date on April 25th at the Metropolis in Montreal.

THs historia

Bill åkte ut i åttondelsfinalen.
